YCN Newsletter 22 - yCAM 2024 short report from Nonna Nurmi

yCAM in the land of thousands of lakes - Short report from Nonna Nurmi from the local organizer's point of view

The young Ceramists Additive Manufacturing Forum (yCAM) was recently organized by the ECerS EMC Network for the 8th time at Tampere University, in Finland. A wonderful amount of 107 participants gathered to experience the typically cool Finnish spring and to share expertise in ceramic additive manufacturing field, giving altogether 111 high-quality oral/poster presentations. Surely reviewing such a large amount of presentation abstracts is hard work, and Mateus Mota Morais and Romain Trihan were acknowledged for their efforts as reviewers. We had a chance to hear 3 invited speakers, Andrea Zocca, Uwe Scheithauer, and Andrew Gleadall, and their thoughts and experiences on challenges and possibilities in Additive Manufacturing. Well-deserved AM CeramYcs Awards were given for the best oral presentation, from Maria Mykland, and the best poster presentation, from Subhadip Bhandari. A special session called RheoCAM, concentrating in tackling challenges in rheology of AM, was organized by Mathilde Maillard and Sylvain Fournier.

I want to give special thanks to the sponsors JECS Trust, 3D Ceram, Lithoz, Hummink, Planmeca Group, American Elements and yCAM committee Anna de Marzi, Sarah Diener, and Johanna Sänger for making the event possible. Not to forget Véronique Huart and Aurore Belot from EMC, who handled the administrative side of the organization! The local host organization committee consisted of people working in the Research Group of Ceramic Materials at Tampere University: professor Erkki Levänen, Erkka Frankberg, and Antonia Ressler. I had the chance of being part of organizing the gala dinner, acting as a session chair and volunteering at the yCAM event. It was the first time for me, and I really enjoyed it.

The gala dinner took place at Puistotorni, a congress center with a history of over 100 years as a former Workers’ Hall. I was glad to see that the young professionals from over 20 countries enjoyed our local specialties, such as sautéed reindeer, and had a great time socializing while Beatwave band played. Throughout the yCAM event, there was a great chance to catch up with colleagues from previous events and connect with new ones. I feel we succeeded in making people feel connected. In fact, I think this is the one of the key strengths of this ceramic community: it is small, but very open-minded, and I have always felt welcome to participate and to share thoughts. Since we work in the developing field of ceramic AM with tremendous possibilities, let’s keep strengthening our network through this open mind and collaborations. See you in the next yCAM!
