YCN Newsletter 25 - 99th Annual Conference “Ceramics” of the DKG from a participant's point of view - Marco Gradaus

The “CERAMICS 2024” was the 99th annual conference of the “Deutsche Keramische Gesellschaft e.V.“ (German ceramic society/DKG), hosted by the WesterWaldCampus in Höhr-Grenzhausen and the University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz (HAW Koblenz) from 9th to 11th September 2024. The conference is open to all scientists in the field of ceramics and includes presentations about recent developments. It is a great opportunity to engage in discourse, exchange knowledge, and establish new connections.

Through the Chair of Glass and Ceramics at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where I did my bachelor thesis, I had the opportunity to attend the conference and present my work “Coextrusion of Reaction-Bonded Carbides by Robocasting” in the poster competition. One evening of the conference was dedicated to the competition, where I, along with the other participants, presented my project to anyone who was interested and had questions about the topic. It was an evening full of interesting discussions and I was able to connect with other scientists in the ceramic community. During the gala dinner the next evening, the winners of the poster competition were announced and I was honored to win the first prize, which was the perfect end to a great week.

Summing up the event, I had the honor of gaining deep insights into national and international research, engaging in conversations with leading experts in their respective fields, and establishing valuable connections. I would like to thank my supervisors of my bachelor thesis Prof. Nahum Travitzky and Dr. Larissa Wahl as well as Dr. Tobias Fey for making my participation at the conference possible.

The results based on my bachelor thesis can be found in following publication:

YCN Newsletter 31 - Research in Spot - Naser Hosseini

Interface Engineering: High-Temperature Interactions Between High-Entropy Ceramics and Metals.

My research explores high-temperature interactions between high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and metals, with a focus on joining strategies for extreme environments. By understanding how metals wet and react with these advanced ceramics, I aim to design reliable interfaces for applications such as composites, coatings, and ceramic joining with functional properties. This work contributes to improving the performance and durability of materials used in demanding industries such as energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
