YCN Newsletter 30 - Reflections from Alejandro Montón

Dear YCN Friends and Colleagues,

As my term on the Young Ceramists Network (YCN) committee comes to a close after a journey that began in December 2021 and ended this January 2026, I want to take a moment to share a few personal reflections and heartfelt thanks.

Being part of this community has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional life. What started as an opportunity to serve has profoundly shaped who I am as a researcher and as a human being. From the very first meetings, through countless newsletters, webinars, photo contests, student evenings, and informal chats that followed formal sessions, I have learned more than I ever could have imagined. The connections we have forged across countries and cultures — and the generous spirit that each of you brings to this network — are what make YCN truly special.

I often think that the true value of a community cannot be measured by outputs or numbers, but by the sense of belonging it creates. YCN gave me not only colleagues and collaborators, but also friends — people who celebrate successes, support through challenges, and inspire with curiosity and kindness. I know I will never be able to give back to this community even a fraction of what it has given me. Yet that realization fills me with gratitude, not regret. I am richer for knowing all of you.

To every member, representative, workshop organiser, volunteer and supporter: thank you. Thank you for your trust, your ideas, your patience, your humour, and your passion for ceramics and for one another. Your energy is what moves this community forward and makes it more than just a network — it makes it a family.

While my role on the committee now ends, my connection to YCN certainly does not. I look forward to the paths we will cross at future events, in research collaborations, and in everyday moments that remind us why we chose this field.

This is not goodbye — merely “see you soon.”

With deep appreciation,

Alejandro Montón.

Interface Engineering: High-Temperature Interactions Between High-Entropy Ceramics and Metals.

My research explores high-temperature interactions between high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and metals, with a focus on joining strategies for extreme environments. By understanding how metals wet and react with these advanced ceramics, I aim to design reliable interfaces for applications such as composites, coatings, and ceramic joining with functional properties. This work contributes to improving the performance and durability of materials used in demanding industries such as energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
